The Materials We Choose

We source the highest quality materials so that you can be confident on and off the bike.

Cowhide is the most popular leather used for motorcycle clothing due to its toughness and durability as well as its resistance to water and dirt. Leather is strong and has a naturally high resistance level to tears.

Importantly, we select top grain leather that’s been tumbled - so it’s soft and comfortable immediately and doesn’t require a ‘break-in’ period you may experience with other leather bike jackets.

Because it is a natural product, leather “breathes” freely, maintaining an insulating comfort level in all seasons, constantly adjusting to its environment.

Our range of leather motorcycle jackets are made from top grain, natural milled cowhide with thickness of 1.1 – 1.3mm.

Top grain cowhide refers to the best upper section of the hide. It remains in its natural state which allows superior fibre strength, resulting in greater durability. The natural grain also has breathability, resulting in greater comfort for clothing.

The thin nature of sheepskin leather jackets found in many fashion stores are not suitable rider wear: 1.1-1.3mm is considered optimal thickness for quality motorcycle wear.

The appearance of our leather jackets will improve with age.

Reissa® is a functional fabric with a breathable membrane with high sensitivity concerning weather conditions. It’s an advanced textile with a highly developed specific polyurethane resin coating or membrane which creates an extremely thin waterproof coating or membrane that is lightweight.

It’s comfortable, soft to touch, extremely durable and highly resistant to rain, wind and snow while maintaining breathability.

We use Reissa® fabric in our Sahara, Savanna, and men’s waxed cotton range.

All our fabric jackets have a protective inner liner made with DuPont™ Kevlar® fibers. Kevlar is used for abrasion resistance.

Abrasion resistance is critically important for rider safety as it provides a protective layer in the event of falls and slides.

DuPont™ Kevlar® aramid fibre is used to make a variety of clothing, accessories, and equipment safe and cut resistant. It’s lightweight, durable and extraordinarily strong. Best known for its use in ballistic and stab-resistant body armor, it’s also used in apparel and gear on the ski slopes, switchback trails, in demanding desert terrain, even the outer limits of space.

Abrasion resistance is naturally found in our leather products.

Armour is an important second layer of rider protection - providing impact protection for the body, typically along the spine, shoulders and elbows.

Blackbird Motorcycle Wear jackets use Certified European (CE) armour as it’s comfortable and easy to wear. We’re always reviewing the latest innovation in armour technology to provide riders with the best solution.

All armour inserts are placed in velcro pockets for easy removal, cleaning and repositioning.
